Project Case Study: House Extension in Ramsbottom
Ramsbottom House Extension
This extension and renovation of a historic property in Ramsbottom presented a rewarding design challenge. From the outset, we carried out a detailed investigation to understand the existing building fabric and its historic character. We specialise as architects for house extensions and renovations of this nature, particularly where traditional buildings require careful adaptation for modern living.
When working with historic properties, it is important to integrate modern construction materials in a sensitive and considered way. As a result, this project explored the relationship between the existing fabric and contemporary architectural ideas while preserving the character of the original building.
Our client felt passionate about their home, so we worked closely with them to develop thoughtful and practical design solutions for the extension and renovation. If you are planning a similar project, we would love to be considered as your architects for house extensions.
House extension
The infill extension sits between two existing structures: the historic house and the detached double garage. To address planning constraints, we introduced full-height glazing and designed a roof profile that complements the surrounding architecture without dominating it. At the same time, the architectural language remains bold and contemporary, creating a deliberate contrast against the rich, dark stone of the original property.
We wanted the house extension to reflect the solidity and strength of the existing stonework while echoing the sturdy character of the historic building. Therefore, we selected timber cladding from Russwood. The project uses Siberian Larch treated with SiOO:X, a surface impregnation system that creates a consistent and naturally weathered appearance over time.
Previously, the existing property felt dark because natural light could not easily penetrate the small and narrow windows. In response, the glazing strategy within the new extension distributes natural light generously throughout the interior space. Triple-glazed aluminium casement windows and a large sliding door also improve thermal performance by reducing heat loss and maintaining a warm, comfortable environment.
In addition, the concrete slab incorporates underfloor heating pipework to provide consistent ambient warmth throughout the extension. We also created a concealed entrance within the kitchen design between the garage and kitchen, allowing discreet access to a small pantry space.
House renovation
We reconfigured and adapted the existing house to create a stronger relationship with the new house extension. First, we formed a new opening within the original external wall to establish the main connection between old and new spaces. We also created a new entrance through the existing kitchen to improve circulation and flow throughout the property.
In addition, we converted former ancillary spaces into a new library and snug. New flooring and lighting then helped modernise the existing interiors while still retaining their historic character. To improve the performance of the original building fabric, we removed later layers of plaster to expose the original stonework. This approach allowed the external walls to breathe naturally and release excess moisture more effectively. Returning the property closer to its original material state also supported the energy efficiency strategy for the extended areas of the house.
Together, the renovation and extension create a clear hierarchy of spaces designed for both everyday living and entertaining. At the same time, the project strengthens the relationship between the house and its setting by framing views across the lush and rolling Lancashire landscape.
